Our voyages are open to sailors with at least intermediate level experience. Ages on board normally range from the mid 20’s to the mid 60’s. The crew is usually a mix of couples and singles, with couples and women typically having private cabins.
Subjects taught underway include navigation, radar, watch standing, provisioning, sail trim and sail changes, reefing, weather and anchoring.

One of the classic passages, this trans-equatorial leg is sailed in warm trade winds. Departing from Raiatea,Alaska Eagle will set off on a 12 – 14 day passage to the Hawaiian Islands. The trip usually begins with fast downwind sailing in the southeast trades before transit of the doldrums under power and crossing the equator with the help of King Neptune! Time and weather permitting, a stop may be made at Fanning Island in the Republic of Kiribati just north of the equator. The last four or five days of this passage are typically spent on a close reach in the northeast trades. Landfall will be made in Honolulu. This voyage presents a great opportunity to develop passage making skills and to practice celestial navigation
From Alaska Eagle’s journal: Nuie is a limestone island known for its spectacular diving and caves. So we toured the island by car and hiked to some of the many caves and chasms that were just beautiful in the sunlight. Togo especially was magnificent. At the end of a 15-minute walk through a coral garden forest (old coral reefs now on land, covered with tropical vegetation) we arrived at acres of coral pinnacles that ended at the water's edge. In the middle was a sandy area with palm trees and a 60-foot ladder to climb down vertically! I would have believed it was a film set rather than another of Mother Nature's marvels - it was just incredible!

From the warm tropical waters of Honolulu to the chilly waters of San Francisco Bay, this leg offers a great opportunity to experience passagemaking. Typically, this passage includes a wide range of sailing conditions, and may include some motoring in the Pacific high. The trip out of Hawaii begins with a beat into the northeast trades. After a few days, winds generally move aft as the boat catches the edge of the Pacific high for an exciting reach to the California coast and the beautiful Golden Gate at the entrance to San Francisco Bay.

This popular leg is an ideal introduction to sailing offshore. Usually a downwind run, there is opportunity to do some night passagemaking, to get an understanding of all that is involved in running a cruising vessel on a 24-hour basis and to practice coastal navigation. Sailing down the coast, Alaska Eagle passes Point Sur and the beautiful San Simeon coast before rounding the Cape Horn of the Pacific, Point Conception. If time and weather allow, one or more stops will be made en route, possibly at Morro Bay, San Miguel Island or at Catalina.
