The Professional Mariner Program prepares students for careers in the maritime industry in Southern California and around the world in private and commercial vessel operations such as:
- Large private Yachts, Charter Yachts
- Cruise Ships, Passenger Ferries
- Sport Fishing, Commercial Fishing
- Whale Watching, Dive Boats
- Supply Vessels, Work Boats, Tug Boats
- Commercial Shipping
These vessels must operate with qualified crew so the OCC Professional Mariner Program was developed with guidance from an Advisory Council of maritime industry professionals who ranked skills & knowledge that they require in their deck crew. Upon completion of the program, there are employment opportunities with competitive salary.
Planned expansion of this program will include courses leading to knowledge, experience and qualification for licenses and certificates that are increasingly required to climb the career ladder as a professional mariner in leadership positions.
Professional Mariner - Level 1
The Professional Mariner Level 1 program will be offered in six courses through Orange Coast College. Satisfactory completion of the six mariner courses plus 3 units of electives will qualify the student for a Certificate of Achievement from the college.
Upon completion of the Professional Mariner Level 1 Certificate the student will have the information, training and practical skills to qualify for work as deckhand on private or commercial yachts, passenger vessels, commercial vessels and workboats.
Curriculum includes seamanship, marine safety, boat handling, navigation, and boat maintenance. Courses are conducted in the classroom and aboard boats. Completion of the marine basic safety course will qualify the student for the U.S. Coast Guard STCW certificate. Core curriculum includes career path identification and job search preparation.
Students may complete the program in two semesters. Courses may be taken in any order.
Fall semester 2011: August 27 - December 18
Spring semester 2012: January 30 - May 27
