About the SCA

Our History and Structure

Our organization is made up of students, alumni, instructors, colleagues and friends of Orange Coast College's School of Sailing and Seamanship (OCCSSS) in Newport Beach, California. The OCCSSS is recognized literally worldwide for providing the most comprehensive, highest quality instruction in all aspects of sailing, from dinghy to ocean racers. The OCC Sailing Association (OCC SA) was established in July, 1995, as the result of the visions of Brad Avery and Karen Prioleau. Our purpose is to provide a mechanism for enthusiastic sailors who have participated in OCCSSS programs to share their love of sailing with others and to provide volunteer support to the OCC SA. We do this by promoting education, skill development, boat racing and cruising enjoyment.

Members of the OCC SA make the OCCSSS a better place by assisting in classes, special events and maintenance of the OCCSSS's fleet and its unique facilities. But all work and no play makes for a dull sailor! Members-only events include races, barbecues, educational events and Catalina sails. As a member in good standing, you also receive: A 10% discount on multiple-evening classes and on-the-water courses (just let the office know you're an OCC SA member when you register), our monthly newsletter "Sail Away," rental privileges for the Lidos and Shields (upon qualification) and placement on the OCC SA's crew lists for cruising and racing opportunities.

The OCC SA actively participates in OCC's community outreach summer sailing program, which provides At Risk Youth ages 12 to 18 with hands-on training and a fun goal-oriented sailing experience. Members of the OCC SA volunteer their time and energy to assist OCC sailing instructors in running the program. The program builds self-esteem and confidence through learning and goal achievement.

In 1998, the Leo Dolack Memorial Fund was established in memory of Staff Commodore Leo Dolack. The Fund was designed to remember the countless hours that Leo put in with endless enthusiasm and to give youth a chance to experience Leo's passion for sailing. The Fund is run by OCC and supports scholarships, community outreach and related programs consistent with Leo's vision of sharing sailing enjoyment and educational opportunities with others.
